I'm a chief of interpretation at a large urban national park, and I have personally witnessed and interacted with literally hundreds of Pokemon players over the last week. Every single one of them was as engaged with their surroundings and with the parks resources as they were with the game itself. They were exploring, learning, interacting, and CONNECTING. So many people of my generation and above condemn technology (especially video games) as the enemy of engagement and connection with the "real world." This game has taken all those assumptions and revealed them to be exactly that: assumptions of those who have not taken the time to understand or observe what is really going on.

Are there places where playing the game is not appropriate? Absolutely! But that falls on us, as park managers, interpreters, guides, educators, to welcome and educate this NEW audience to our parks, museums, refuges, etc, about not only the where, but also the why.

If we are so quick to cast judgement on something literally MILLIONS of people love, calling it "outlandish," we are simultaneously casting judgement on those that play it. And that is a very slippery slope that can quickly lead to an unwelcoming atmosphere of derision, mockery, and humiliation. And as a member of the geek/nerd community my entire life, these are atmospheres I am very familiar with and feel have absolutely no place in our public lands. If we want to turn off this new audience permanently to our public lands, and ensure that they never want to value them, that is the surest way to do it. P. I also think that those involved will be so engrossed in the game, possibly missing out on enjoying the world around them and most likely unaware of how their focus on the game can be distracting to others who are there to enjoy the environment. What they did is take unmotivated students and worked with them on design projects to enhance their community. They researched and built improved chicken coops, food stalls for farmers and a farmers market for their town. The idea is based on giving the kids what they need to learn to thrive, and include the subjects they are supposed to be learning as part of their research. For example design contains a lot of mathematical skills that could be taught through learning about design. Next year I am working with my Grade 5 class to focus on Visual arts, Theatre and Social Justice. I am going to teach as much as I can all the other subject areas through these topics.Bill Fergusonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17897284281977541749noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6368069574256195545.post-35757102440633906402014-05-08T08:25:29.839-07:002014-05-08T08:25:29.839-07:00Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts Bi...Thanks for sharing your experience and thoughts Bill. This frightens them because they have to give up control and share it with their students. For the last year I have been using his methods in my class. They work rather effectively. My students are happier and more involved as they ask stronger questions and pursue their interests. Is it the way of education in the future? No, it is simply a path that will lead us to something better. I am fusing SOLE with Project H Design next year. I personally continue to try to strike this balance in both teaching and my personal life. We address this question in part in our upcoming post. For me, it's about knowing the tech that is available and then picking and choosing the tools that work for me at any given time. Sometimes it is high tech. Other times, it is no tech. Kevin Kelly's "What Technology Wants" is a great read that looks at this issue as well.

Again, your comment and views are welcome here!

CAcahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05017755595638209289noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6368069574256195545.post-34827909105611526902012-01-09T06:44:51.971-08:002012-01-09T06:44:51.971-08:00Is it too much though?
